Permits increase slightly for single family homes

No building permits were issued in Union County for commercial and industrial development in the third quarter of 2012 but permits for single family dwellings were up slightly according to a report issued by the Catawba Regional Council of Governments.

According to its website (catawbacog.org) the Catawba Regional Council of Governments or COG “is an association of South Carolina local governments in Chester, Lancaster, Union, and York counties. The COG serves as a forum for intergovernmental cooperation and as a central staffing resource for grantsmanship, land use and transportation planning, community and economic development, workforce investment, GIS mapping, information systems, and project management.”

One of the services the COG provides is a quarterly report on regional building permit trends. The third quarter report, which was issued earlier this month, states that the COG’s analysis of the data gathered for the months of July, August and September “shows that the region’s four counties generally had higher permits for single family, multi-family and mobile home as compared to 2011. Commercial permits totals were mixed up while industrial permit activity was down.”

In Union County, the report states that there was “a slight increase in permits for single family homes while permit totals for mobile homes remained the same. There were no permit no commercial or industrial permits issued during this quarter in 2011 or 2012.”

The report states that:

• Six permits for single family dwellings were issued in the county in the third quarter of 2012 compared to five in 2011, an increase of 20 percent.

• Ten permits for mobile homes were issued in the county in the third quarter of 2012, the same as in 2011.

• In addition to there being no commercial or industrial permits issued in either quarter, no permits were issued for multi-family dwellings during either of those periods.
