A Canadian metal fabricator is opening a plant in York County that will bring as many as 200 new jobs over the next five years.
St. Romuald, Quebec-based Supermetal will open the facility in the former Worthington Steel building in Lesslie. The company makes architectural and structural steel for the building industry.
“It’s a good project,” said York County economic development director Mark Farris. “It’s exactly the kind of manufacturing we need.”
The first 35 employees should start work at the 160,624-square-foot plant in September, said Jean-Francois Blouin, the company’s president and general manager. The work force should expand to between 150 and 200 within five years, he said.
Founded in 1959, Supermetal supplies, fabricates and erects structural steel for a variety of projects, including bridges, office towers and research centers, according to its Web site.
Its plants have an annual production capacity of 45,000 tons.
The company’s projects have included work for Yale Medical Center, Boston University, Sun Microsystems and the expansion of Fenway Park in Boston.
The company already is advertising locally for a plant manager and human resources officer. Supermetal’s Web site also says the company is actively seeking to fill positions for welders, draftsmen and engineers, among others.
