Our Region at a Glance

The City of Union is located in the “heart” of Union County, South Carolina. It serves as the county seat and has a 2020 Census population of 8,174 people.

The City of Union, as well as the county, received its name from the old Union Church that was located close to the Monarch Mill around 1765. Originally, the city took on the name Unionville, but later the name was shortened to Union. The early settlers to the area were mainly from the Scotch-Irish descent.

The City is governed under the Mayor-Council form of government by a seven-member city council.  The council is composed of six council members elected from six council districts and a mayor elected at-large to four-year, staggered terms of office.  The mayor chairs the council meetings and is responsible for all the day to day operations and general management of the City.

The warm welcome The City of Union extends to newcomers and visitors is more than Southern hospitality.  It’s their way of life.  You’ll find an overabundance of friendliness in the City of Union.
